As a classical musician and IT industry journalist, I can 100% back everything you say. Moreover, I find it easier to shift intellectual gears after spending several hours writing than just sweating nonstop at the instrument.

Thankfully, my own experience has taught me to prioritize polymathy, but I wish I had known that at 18, when I was quite stubborn and thought it a betrayal to sway away from total dedication to music.

The real betrayal, as I’ve learned and written about, is adapting your artistic values to pop standards, which inevitably happens when you don’t have a day job to stay independent.
